APOLLONIA VANOVA is a Toronto-based artist and gallerist. Born in the former Czechoslovakia, and a graduate of the Emily Carr University of Art + Design, she examines the subject of narcissism in contemporary society, producing myth and allegory as her frequent subject and frame.

Vanova works in various and contrasting media, including bronze, plastic, wood, acrylic, leather, wire, and hair. She articulates a hubris and hedonism unique to her generation, highlighting our appetite – however much in vain – to know and to have. Ultimately, Vanova takes care not to reveal too much, embodying the suggestion of depth beneath the derma of consumption and desire, where dualisms are encouraged and the mercurial is made to glint.
